TMJ is the temporomandibular joint. This is the area where the lower jaw attaches to the skull. TMJ dysfunction refers to the abnormalities related to the opening and closing of the lower jaw. This can be caused due to trauma, teeth grinding, excessive clenching of the jaw muscles and malocclusion (improper fitting of teeth). TMJ dysfunction results in ear pain, headache, chronic aching sensation around the temple, etc. Sometimes, it can also lead to reduced hearing and dizziness. Diagnosis and Treatment

TMJ dysfunction can be diagnosed by a proper physical examination of the joints and muscles around the lower jaw. Since the symptoms are associated with the muscles, the abnormalities do not appear on X-rays. TMJ dysfunction can be treated by:

  • Joint rest and soft diet

  • Application of ice and heat

  • Stress reduction and relaxation techniques

  • Non-steroidal and anti-inflammatory medicines
